Last Sunday we went for a drive to the country. The region where I spent my childhood is close to the highest point of the Netherlands. And would you believe I had never been there? So we drove to the watch-tower on the Vaalserberg. It is located on the spot where three countries meet namely Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. While writing this post it suddenly occurred to me that the pictures I took on Sunday are historic now. Since 10.10.2010 the highest point of the Netherlands is Mount Scenery on the isle of Saba. Saba was part of the Dutch Antilles which ceased to exist last Monday. Curacoa, Aruba and St. Maarten chose to be independent countries while Saba, St. Eustacius and Bonaire prefered to stay part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Officially the three islands together are now a Dutch municipality.
Untill last Monday this was the highest point of the Netherlands, 323 m above NAP (sea level)
Typical for this region are the slim pointed church towers. You see them everywhere in the villages between the hills.

Hiya Cybele,
I enjoyed seeing the places you visited. And the steeple on the church against the sky.
Prachtig uitzicht vanaf de Vaalserberg. De boomtoppen op de voorgrond geven je foto een mooie diepte. Voor mij blijft dit toch echt het hoogste punt van ons land.
:-)
Maak er een mooi weekend van!
Beautiful captures and such gorgeous, blue, blue skies! Love your composition! Happy SWF! Hope you have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy!

That is a beautiful shot of the houses and farmland down below the hill in your first photo, and the church steeple is lovely against the blue, blue sky!
Our last name is VanderBeek, and all of my husband's grandparents are from the Netherlands--Groeningen on his dad's side and Friesland on his mom's side. They came to America in the early 1900s--first to Michigan and Iowa and later to California where they developed farms. I don't have any Dutch ancestry (:( ) ....I'm of English, Irish, Swedish, French and Native American Indian ancestry.
Somehow we miss the things which are right in our backyards, I, too, have been exploring areas close to home,
What a great vantage point for photographing the region. I love the church tower against the sky and also the first wide landscape.
Great sky shots!
Sky Watch at my page.

Such gorgeous clear blue skies! That kind of sky seems rare here in Ontario. :)

Jammer dat we het niet zo mooi
blauw kunnen houden die lucht!
Knappe foto's!
